WEEKEND WRAP: Aussies claim 21-piece medal haul across land and water

It was a strong weekend for Aussie sport, with Olympians and Olympic hopefuls claiming nine medals on the water, 12 on land and a quota spot for Tokyo 2020.

WEEKEND WRAP: It was a strong weekend for Aussie sport, with Olympians and Olympic hopefuls claiming nine medals on the water, 12 on land and a quota spot for Tokyo 2020.

ROWING

Australia’s rowers finished strong in Rotterdam, wrapping up their third World Rowing Cup with five gold, three silver and one bronze medal. Their dominant result also nabbed them the overall 2019 World Rowing Cup.

The haul of silverware was spread across;

GOLD

  • Men’s Pairs & Fours
  • Women’s Pairs & Fours
  • Lightweight Men’s

SILVER

  • Women’s Double and Single Scull
  • Women’s Eights

BRONZE

  • Women’s Quadruple Scull

SWIMMING

Noosa’s open water superfish, , with the 25-year-old placing seventh in the women’s 10km event at the 2019 World Swimming Championship in South Korea.

It was a tight and fierce battle, with Lee clocking a time of 1:54:50.50 – just 3.30 seconds behind China’s first placed, Xin Xin.

SURFING

Australia’s defending champ Steph Gilmore will look to guard her J-Bay crown as she heads into the quarterfinals against USA’s Caroline Marks. Fellow Aussie and current world number 1, Sally Fitzgibbons will also compete in the quarters, taking on Hawaii’s Malia Manuel.

Owen Wright, Ryan Callinan and Adrian Buchan have all progressed to the Round of 16, with competition continuing today. You can follow the results HERE.

DIVING

Australia’s success in the water continued at the 2019 FINA Diving World Champs, in Gwanju, South Korea.

Melissa Wu and Emily Chinnock finished eighth on their debut in the Women’s 10m Platform Synchro, while Georgia Sheehan placed ninth and Esther Qin finished 15th in the 1m event.

The pairing of Matt Carter and Shixin Li came 14th in the Men’s 3m Synchro, while Li also placed 15th in the Men’s 1m event and Kevin Chavez placed 24th. The action continues this week, and you can follow along HERE.

WATER POLO

The Aussie Stingers went down in a hard-fought match against Italy, 9-10, in their opening match of the World Championships. The women will take on China next, on Tuesday at 5.30 pm AEST, while the Aussie Sharks kick off their campaign today against Croatia at 1.30 pm AEST.

 ATHLETICS

Back on land, Australia’s athletics superstars competed in the World University Games, taking home an incredible 10 medals (four gold, three silver and two bronze) – the best result by an Australian Team in the 60-year history of the Games.

Gold was shared between Rio 2016 Olympian Matt Denny (discus), Catriona Bisset (Women’s 800m), Katie Hayward (20kW and Female Racewalk Team Event), Jemima Montag and Philippa Huse (Female Racewalk Team Event).

Silver went to Jemima Montag (20kW), Georgia Griffith (1500m), Celeste Mucci, Riley Day, Nana Owusu-Afriyie and Abbie Taddeo (4x100m Women) and Alec Diamond (Decathlon) while Jess Stafford, Morgan Mitchell, Gen Cowie and Bella O’Grady claimed bronze in the 4x400m women and there was bronze for Darcy Roper (Long Jump).

TRIATHLON

Sprinter Emma Jeffcoat kept the medals coming, claiming gold at the International Triathlon Union World Cup in Hungary, but she wasn’t the only Australian to find the podium.

Fellow Aussie Kelly-Ann Perkins came in at third, just behind Austria’s Sara Vilic.

CYCLING

Mountain Biker Bec McConnell also claimed a top ten finish for the Aussies, finishing eighth at the 2019 UCI Mountain Biking World Cup in France.
