This weekend national champions were crowned, Tokyo 2020 dreams were kept alive and Olympic qualifier squads were named as Aussie athletes continued to kick the year off with a bang.
Football – Olyroos keep Tokyo dream alive
The Olyroos have jumped to the top of their U-23 Asian Cup pool after beating hosts Thailand 2-1, pushing them closer to qualifying for their first Olympic Games in 12 years.
After a 1-1 draw against Iraq in their opening match, the 2-1 victory over hosts Thailand has put Australia on top of the pool with four points with one pool match against Bahrain to go.
With the top three teams at the tournament earning a Tokyo 2020 quota place, the Olyroos will look to keep their strong form going against Bahrain and into potential quarterfinal matchups. Find out more HERE
Volleyball – Aussies miss out on Tokyo spots at Asian qualifiers
The Australian men's and women's volleyball teams' Tokyo 2020 dreams came to an end, missing out on their last chance for Olympic qualification at their respective Asian Qualification Tournaments.
With only the overall winner at the men's tournament in China and the women's tournament in Thailand earning a spot at Tokyo 2020, both men's and women's team just missed the semi-finals finishing third in their pool.

Tennis – Aussies impress reaching semi-finals at ATP Cup
Alex de Minaur and Nick Kygrios fell just short of reaching the finals of the ATP Cup, with Spain winning their semi-final tie 3-0.
De Minaur had one of the best games of his career, taking it to world number one Rafael Nadal before going down 6-4, 5-7, 1-6.
Kygrios earlier fell to world number 10 Roberto Bautista Agut 1-6, 4-6. Despite the semi-final loss, the Australian team can celebrate an exceptional ATP Cup, with incredible performances throughout the competition.

Cycling – Meyer, Spratt, Gigante and Durbridge crowned national champions
An emotional Cameron Meyer won a maiden road race title in his 12th attempt and Amanda Spratt was crowned road race champion at the 2020 national championships in Ballarat.
Nine-time track world champion Meyer became the first Australian man to complete the RoadNats trifecta, adding the 2020 road race title to his dual time trial (2010, 2011) and criterium (2013) crowns.

Earlier in the week, teenager Sarah Gigante rode a stunning time trial to win the national title ahead of defending champion Grace Brown, while Luke Durbridge defended his time trial crown in a scorching performance ahead of reigning world champion Rohan Dennis.

Canoe Slalom – Fox, Delfour and Watkins crowned national champions
Australia’s best paddlers took on the Penrith whitewater at the 2019 National Championships in the first major event of 2020.
Jessica Fox won the C1 and K1 double, Lucien Delfour claimed the K1 title and Daniel Watkins won his third straight C1 title.

Sailing – Wearn and Stransky win Laser nationals
Matt Wearn won his fifth Laser national title and Mara Stransky defended her 2019 Laser Radial crown in Melbourne.
With the World Championships on the same course next month, the field included many of the world’s top sailors looking to get acclimated to the conditions.

Wearn, who was selected for the Tokyo 2020 team in September last year, dominated the event, finishing 11 points clear of his nearest competitor, Kiwi Sam Meech.
Stransky finished as the top-ranked Australian in the Laser Radial event, which was won by Dutch 2016 Rio champion Marit Bouwmeester.

Basketball – Opals squad named for Olympic qualifier
Basketball Australia have named a 12-strong squad for February’s Tokyo 2020 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Bourges, France.
Needing to finish in the top three of their pool to earn a spot at Tokyo 2020, the squad includes players with vast Olympic and World Championships experience like Liz Cambage, Jenna O’Hea and Leilani Mitchell.
