Weekend Wrap: Testing Tokyo and taking quotas

It was another big weekend in Australian Olympic sport with a Tokyo 2020 Gymnastic quota spot, gold in the BMX Racing Test Event and podium finishes around the world.

EQUESTRIAN

Seven-time Olympian and three-time Olympic Champion, Andrew Hoy earned a Tokyo 2020 quota spot for both of his horses, Vassily de Lassos and Bloom Des Hauts Crets at the Strzegom Horse Trials.

Hoy and Vassily de Lassos finished second in the CCI4*-L with a score of 38.00, while Hoy and Bloom des Hauts Crets finished ninth with a final score of 54.20

GYMNASTICS

Aussie gymnasts wrapped up the 49th edition of the FIG Artistic World Championships earning two Tokyo 2020 Olympic quota spots through Georgia Godwin and Tyson Bull. Bull finished the competition ranked seventh in the world in Horizontal Bar, while Godwin is now placed 18th in All-Around.

 

SHOOTING

Rio 2016 Olympian Laetisha Scanlan flew the flag for Shooting Australia, winning silver in Trap Women at the ISSF World Cup Final in Al Ain, UAE. Scanlan didn't stop there, taking out silver in the Mixed Team Trap event alongside Lyndon Sosa of Luxemborg.

Fellow Aussie Luke Argiro was paired with the USA's Caitlin Connor as they took out gold in the President's Trophy Mixed Team Skeet and another mixed Aussie gold was claimed through Rio 2016 Olympic Champion Catherine Skinner and Khaled Almudhaf of Kuwait in the Mixed Team Trap event.

CYCLING - BMX

Saya Sakakibara tested the track at 'Ready, Steady, Tokyo' where she took out the test event, narrowly edging out reigning World Champion, Alise Post.

Fellow Aussie, Anthony Dean just missed a podium place, finishing in fourth, while Sakakibara's brother, Kai's day was cut short due to injury. 

WORLD BEACH GAMES

Australia's 40-strong team have all begun competition at the inaugural ANOC World Beach Games, with women's and men's Beach Volleyball, men's Beach Handball and wakeboarder Cory Teunissen into the finals.

SURFING

Australia's surfers impressed at the France Pro, with Jack Freestone making it as far as the semifinals, while Ryan Callinan, Adrian Buchan and Sally Fitzgibbons bowed out in the quarters. Julian Wilson, Wade Carmichael, Nikki Van Dijk and Macy Callaghan's competition came to an end in the Round of 16, while Owen Wright and Soli Bali were knocked out in the Round of 32. Bronte Macaulay and Stephanie Gilmore both bowed out in the Elimination Round.

VOLLEYBALL

The men's Volleyroos continued their World Championship competition at the FIVB World Cup, going down to World Champions Poland, 0 -3. The Aussie men have three matches left to contest - USA on the 13th, Tunisia on the 14th and Argentina on the 15th of October. 

BOXING

Australia's female boxers continued to fight it out at the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships in Ulan-Ude, Russia.

Skye Nicolson, Caitlin Parker, Antonia Konstantopoulou, Jessica Messina, Jess Bagley, Kaye Scott, Anya Stidsman, Taylah Robertson and Kaila Riley all competed in the event.

Konstatopoulou made it as far as the quarterfinals while her teammates bowed out in the preliminary rounds.
