Australia’s Olympic hopefuls tested Olympic the track, field and water this weekend, getting a taste of what’s to come in less than a year at Tokyo 2020, while Brandon Starc leapt to his second Diamond League title.
Commonwealth Games gold medallist Brandon Starc added another Diamond League victory to his collection, taking out the Birmingham edition of the competition over the weekend.
Starc won the men's high jump with a Season's Best jump of 2.30m. It is his second Diamond League victory, after taking out the Diamond League Final in Brussels in August 2018.
But Starc wasn’t the only Aussie to find the Diamond League podium, with Tasmanian Stewart McSweyn placing second in the men’s 1500m in a time of 3:35.21, just .09 of a second behind Uganda's Ronald Musagala.
Long and triple jumper Henry Frayne also scored himself a spot on the Doha 2019 Athletics World Championships Team, jumping an 8.19 m long jump world cup qualifier at Sierra Nevada in Spain.

SWIMMING
Australia topped the ladder at the FINA World Cup in Singapore, taking home 14 gold medals. Mitch Larkin led the charge claiming three golds in the 100m and 200m Backstroke along with the 4x50m Freestyle Mixed Relay. Grant Irvine claimed gold in the 100m and 200m Butterfly, while Ben Roberts took out the 1500m Butterfly and Thomas Fraser-Holmes the 400m Individual Medley.
Emily Seebohm and Holly Barratt collected two golds each in the 100 m and 200m Backstroke and the 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly, respectively, while Cate Campbell and Maddy Gough also finished first in the 50m and 400m Freestyle.
TOKYO 2020 TEST EVENTS
EQUESTRIAN
Seven-time Olympian, Andrew Hoy and his horse, Bloom Des Hauts kicked off Australia's "Ready, Steady, Tokyo" (RST) campaign, competing at the Equestrian Olympic Test Event at Baji Koen Equestrian Park. After an impressive first place finish in Dressage and second in Cross Country, the duo proceeded to the jump off, hitting one rail and finishing in fifth overall.
SAILING
14 Aussie sailors have dipped their toes into the water at Enoshima Yacht Harbour during their own RST Olympic Test Event, with Laser’s Matt Wearn, 470’s Mat Belcher and Will Ryan and 49er’s Will and Sam Phillips all posting top three finishes on Day 1.
Day 2 also produced some promising results, with Belcher and Ryan sitting in second place on the ladder and several other green and gold competitors edging their way into the top five.
Australia’s top sailors will continue to sail the site of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at Fujisawa, Japan, with competition continuing until August 22.
TRIATHLON
Aussie triathletes also tested out the Tokyo 2020 track late last week.
The squad was challenged with warm and windy conditions during their individual races with Jake Birtwhistle finishing 11th, Ryan Fisher 18th, Luke Willian 21st and Matt Hauser 30th. The women also battled the heat and humidity, with Emma Jackson finishing 15th ahead of fellow Aussies Natalie Van Coevorden in 28th, Jaz Hedgeland in 36th and Emma Jeffcoat 44th.
Jeffcoat, Hauser, Ashleigh Gentle and Fisher returned to the course on Sunday for the the Mixed Relay Team event, stepping up from their individual races to finish fifth at Odaiba Park.
The Australian Team posted a time of 01:27:40, while winners, France, came in at 01:26:33.
HOCKEY
The Hockeyroos produced a mixed bag of results at their own Olympic Test Event, with a 2-3 loss to China and a 2-2 draw to India so far.
The Aussies will take on Japan tomorrow (Tuesday), at 6.30 pm (AEST) with the third place play-off on August 21 at 6.30 pm and the final 8.45 pm.

The women’s Volleyroos had a rough start to their Volleyball Asian Championship campaign, going down 0-3 to Kazakhstan in Seoul, South Korea. They will next face India in their pool match at 3.00 pm (AEST) today.

The Boomers battled it out during their FIBA World Cup preparations with a 90-70 loss and a 81-73 victory against Canada, while the Opals announced their squad for the FIBA Asian Cup.

TENNIS
After dominating with consecutive three-set victories, Ash Barty’s impressive Cincinnati run came to an end on Sunday, when she came up against a “too strong” Svetlana Kuznetsova in the semi-finals.
The score settled at 6-2, 6-4, halting Barty’s bid to return to her world number one spot.
Fellow Aussie Alex De Minaur made it as far as the third round, falling to Yoshihito Nishioka 7-5, 6-4, while Nick Kyrgios was knocked out in the second round by Karen Khacnanov 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4), 6-2.
