Laura Peel - freestyle ski opening ruka

Australia's winter athletes are well and truly back in action with Aeriel Skier Laura Peel claiming the World Cup opener in Finland.

After a strong finish to last season, the 2019-2020 World Cup champion and world No. 1, Laura Peel, kicked off the new winter season just as she ended her last, victorious.

The Canberran was the only female competitor to jump triple somersaults, qualifying for the finals with a score of 88.51 points, followed by a huge score of 101.28 after performing a flawless lay-tuck-full, single twisting triple back somersault in the first round of finals.

She then went on to win the medal round, scoring 83.87, ahead of Germany's Emma Weiss and Russia's Anastasiia Prytkova.

Meanwhile, Australia's Moguls team also collected some impressive placings in their first event of the season.

Matt Graham and Brodie Summers placed fifth and sixth respectively to make the Super Final, with Jakara Anthony in ninth just missing out by 0.3 points.

In her World Cup return from injury, Britt Cox placed 11th with James Matheson 18th and Sophie Ash, 20th, missing the finals and Cooper Woods in 48th.

Australia's Aerials Skiers will be in action next in Yuroslavl, Russia on January 16 and 17, while the next stop for the Moguls team will be next weekend in Idrefjall, Sweden.

The Aussie Summer Olympians kept the results coming with Rio 2016's Patrick Tiernan setting a new Oceania and Australian record in the men's 10,000m.

It was at the Sound Running Meet in Orange County, California that Tiernan, who placed second in a time of 27:22.55, broke fellow Aussie Stewart McSweyn's record of 27:23.80 set last year. His new result is a Tokyo Olympic qualifier, adding to his 5000m qualifier from July 2019.

Tiernan wasn't the only Australian track and field star edging closer to Tokyo 2020, with pole vaulter Nina Kennedy jumping an Olympic qualifying height.

The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist competed at the WA Athletics Stadium, vaulting 4.70m - just 1 cm shy of her PB set in 2018, putting the Tokyo hopeful in good stead for an Olympic debut.
