Whateley becomes third Aussie boxer off to Rio
Victorian heavyweight Jason Whateley has booked his spot at the Rio Olympics after holding out second-ranked Tajikstani fighter Jakhon Qurbonova at the Asian Oceania qualifiers in China.

BOXING: Victoria’s Jason Whateley is the third Australian boxer to qualify for Rio, winning his bronze medal bout at the Asian Oceania Olympic qualifiers in China.

24-year-old Whateley beat India’s Jakhon Qurbonov in a points decision in the 91kg division, joining Shelley Watts and Daniel Lewis as qualifiers for this year’s Olympics.

It will be Whateley’s first Olympic Games.

Fellow Australia female boxers Caitlyn Parker and Kristy Harris will get another chance to qualify at the Women’s World Championships in Kazakhstan next month, while the men will get a final chance to book their Olympic ticket in Azerbaijan in June.
