CANOE/KAYAK - SPRINT: Following two days of trials in Penrith, Australian Canoeing has selected Athletes to a pool for the 2013 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Duisburg, Germany from 27 August to 1 September.

The team pool includes a mix of new and experienced athletes with youngsters like Jordon Wood and Bill Bain earning their stripes following good performances at the first round of trials in Perth in April and the final trial in Penrith.

The young guns will be in good company as they join a gold medal team and training partners from the Gold Coast, Tate Smith, Jacob Clear, David Smith, Murray Stewart and Ken Wallace.

"Yeah I'm stoked to make it", said Bill Bain who also has the matter of the Under 23 world championship to contend with a month before the senior worlds "but there is still a long way to go and a lot of hard work ahead", added the 19 year old.

Stand out performers were Murray Stewart, the winner of K1 and K2 1000 and his K2 partner Jake Clear, 2nd in K1 1000 metres and Western Australians Steve Bird and Jesse Phillips who had a convincing win in the K2 200m.

As expected, Alana Nicholls, Naomi Flood and Bernadette shone in the women's events with respective wins in K1 200m (Nicholls), K1 500m (Naomi Flood) and K2 500m (Flood and Wallace).

Amongst the team are 5 Paracanoeing Athletes who begin their campaign for the Rio Paralympic Games where the discipline will be included in the Paralympic Games for the first time.

National Performance Director, Richard Fox, said the June trials had allowed new blood to flourish and others to find their form after a long London campaign.

"We have definitely seen good improvements from the younger athletes which is pleasing and some strong performance as expected from our seasoned campaigners which gives us a good mix of youth and experience heading into the world championships in August", Fox said.

"It is also great to see the competition emerging for the Paracanoeing spots on the team now we have Rio on the horizon. With the new funding support from the Australian Paralympic Committee and AIS we hope to build on our performance in the Para events and make an impact", Fox added.

With no time to lose following the trials, the women head straight into camp at Penrith on Monday, the 1000 metre men will go into an extended camp at the AIS facility on the Gold Coast next week before heading overseas early in August while the 200m athletes will base themselves in Perth.
