CURLING: Canada created history in Sochi when it became the first nation to win both men’s and women’s Curling events in the same Olympics.

The women’s team began the historic achievement by defeating Sweden 6-3 in the final, to claim their first gold since Nagano 1998. 

Canada hasn’t missed a medal in the women’s competition since it was introduced at the Nagano Games, but after two bronze medals and a silver in the past three attempts, Canada was back on top of the podium.

"It's a dream come true to be at the Olympics with these girls," Dawn McEwen said.

"It's amazing and they are so talented and I'm so proud of everyone for the week that we've had. The support from Canada has been amazing."

Canadian skip Jennifer Jones led her side to victory, becoming the first women’s team to win all matches in a single Olympic Winter Games, matching the feats of the Canadian men’s team at Vancouver 2010.

After losing their semi-final to Canada, Great Britain bounced back to claim bronze over Switzerland in a tense 6-5 encounter.

The Canadian men then completed the golden double by winning their third straight gold medal, defeating Great Britain 9-3 in a one-sided final.

Skipped by Brad Jacobs, Canada went through the round robin stage with seven wins and two losses (to Sweden and Switzerland).

"I am a little surprised (at the margin in the final)," said Jacobs.

"This week was a huge grind, the toughest test for me and my team."

"It's tough to carry that weight (of a nation) on your shoulders. I am relieved."

Sweden, who were the top-ranked team heading into semi-finals, lost their clash with Great Britain before claiming the Bronze medal over the Chinese.

Russia could not match it with their more fancied rivals in both competitions with both the men’s and women’s teams finishing with three wins and six losses each.

Australia did not have any teams competing in the Curling competition at Sochi 2014.
