Australian diving star Melissa Wu's hopes of a world championship medal remain alive after she scraped into the women's platform final in Hungary.

DIVING: Australian diving star Melissa Wu's hopes of a world championship medal remain alive after she scraped into the women's platform final in Hungary.

The three-time Olympian started Tuesday strongly by qualifying second in a 37-person field for the semi-final in Budapest.

Two of Wu's dives in the preliminary round were scored the equal-highest and she progressed with compatriot Taneka Kovchenko, who qualified eighth.

But the pair, who teamed up two days ago to claim fifth in the women's 10m synchro, faltered in the semi-final.

Wu, an Olympic silver medallist at Beijing 2008, dropped down to 11th-best in qualifying for the 12-diver final after her first and fourth dives were scored at the lower end of the scale.

Kovchenko finished last (18th) in the semi-final.

Wu also competed in the mixed 10m team event final on Tuesday - the last of her four events at the championships - alongside Australia's Matthew Carter.

The pair finished 12th in the final, falling away towards the end of the event after holding fifth place after three dives.

Wednesday's platform final will be Wu's final chance of a medal as she completes her tournament.

She finished seventh in the mixed 10m synchro final with Domonic Bedggood on Saturday.
