National Redress Scheme (NRS) – Sporting Organisations

Our Member Sports are committed to ensuring that full and appropriate redress is available to all people who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse.

Full participation requires some work currently being undertaken that will allow sports to participate in a sustainable manner by the 31 December 2020 deadline.

The AOC, Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) and Paralympics Australia (PA) have developed a project plan that sets out a timetable of work designed to develop an alternative mechanism for sports to exist under the Scheme’s legislative framework to ensure they meet their financial obligations.

Additionally, the plan will:

  • provide for managing applications under the federated structure of sports;
  • agree a communications protocol for Sports and the NRS, and;
  • develop a kit that will assist sport administrators’ interaction with the Scheme over the period of the NRS operative life.

The project plan is largely based on undertaking a case study of 10-12 sports, large and small, as they progress through the NRS onboarding process so as to identify and confirm the issues and/or concerns raised by the Sports in joining the NRS. This will be important to informing the development of an alternative mechanism.

The AOC, NRS and representatives from the Sports participating in the case study, will work together to evaluate the findings and make recommendations to the Minister.
