For skeleton Olympic hopeful, John Farrow, it all comes down to 90 seconds this weekend, when he competes in his last qualification race before the 2014 Sochi Games.
Thirty-one-year-old Farrow was a slim chance to qualify for the Olympic Games, but after an outstanding performance last weekend in St Moritz he has moved up in the rankings and now is one off reallocation for the Games.
Farrow produced his best slides yet to finish 12th at the FIBT World Cup in Switzerland in a total time of 2:18.21, just 2.67 seconds behind winner Martin Dukars of Latvia.
“The result feels great but more of a relief then anything,” Farrow said.
“I know I can perform at this level and it’s finally great to get some proof and continue the drive to Sochi.”
Farrow produced solid runs from the top right to the bottom and focussed on specific corners to improve his results.
“I had close to top speeds all week out of horseshoe and I think executing this corner well twice really helped my result,” he said.
“I made a small mistake in devils dyke in run one which bled a little speed at the bottom of the track, however my coach Eric Bernotas and I talked through some small adjustments and I dialled it in on run 2 enabling some good speeds over 135kmh.”
“This saw me jump up a place on run 2. We should call that corner Eric’s Dyke from now on.”
Mental preparation was a huge part of Farrow’s race strategy. After some tense mistakes earlier in the week, the Sydneysider was able to readjust some of the problem areas.
“I was able to stay calm and confident in what I needed to do - to be fast, not stress about the first race and came to line ready to do what I needed,” he said.
“The execution went well and I was able to leave St Moritz with my best result yet.”
“With the team having some hard luck the last two races I’m glad I was able to bring a lift back to the team and looking forward to all of us moving with some forward momentum in our lead up to Sochi.
Farrow is now in Igls, Austria with the fellow skeleton athletes Michelle Steele and Lucy Chaffer as well as the men’s and women’s bobsleigh team for the FIBT World Cup. He will need to dig deep again this weekend and produce an outstanding performance, in what is his last Olympic qualification race.
Farrow will compete at 10am local time on Saturday 18 January, which is 8pm AEDT.
