CYCLING: Anna Meares OAM has been selected to the UCI Athletes’ Commission.

Three months after announcing the overhaul of the Commission, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced 13 athletes voted from the National Federations nomination members.

The Athletes' Commission will aim improve the training and competition conditions for athletes; give riders the opportunity to have their say; allow the UCI to receive riders’ opinions directly and to reinforce the links between current or recently-retired athletes and the UCI.

The athletes will represent the UCI’s eight official disciplines up until 2017, with Meares, 31, selected as the female representative in the discipline of track.

Meares has established herself as one of Australia's favourite sporting heroes, battling back from a life threatening neck injury in 2008 to forge one of the most successful cycling careers in history.

A three-time Olympian and dual Olympic gold medallist, Meares also boasts five Commonwealth Games gold medals and recently won a record eleventh career world title at the UCI Track World Championships,

“Anna is one of Australia's and world cycling’s most respected and talented athletes and she exemplifies how cycling should be contested both on and off the road or track,” said CA CEO Nicholas Green OAM.

“What she has achieved and overcome in her illustrious careers has laid the perfect foundation for this role, and Cycling Australia wishes her all the best.”
