In a strong field, Shaw qualified in tenth place, but fell in her first heat when trying to overtake another rider on a technical part of the course to move into second place.
She landed badly after attempting a set of triple rollers, and finished the event in tenth place. It was the first snowboard cross race Shaw had contested since March 2004.
Fellow Ski and Snowboard Australia rider Stephanie Hickey finished in 18th place.
The race was won by top Swiss rider Kathrin Kellengerger, with six time World Cup winner Lindsey Jacobellis of the United States in second place.
The Snowboard World Championships begin in Whistler on January 15. Shaw had a best result in the 2003 world titles of 21st in snowboard cross.
