Athletes' last chance to qualify

Australia's athletes are spread across Europe this weekend either fine tuning their Olympic preparation, hoping to find form or desperately trying to record an 11th hour qualifier for the Games.

Australia's athletes are spread across Europe this weekend either fine tuning their Olympic preparation, hoping to find form or desperately trying to record an 11th hour qualifier for the Games.

While medal hopes Sally Pearson and Dani Samuels compete at Friday's Paris Diamond League meeting and long jump fancy Mitchell Watt is in Madrid on Saturday with out-of-touch pole vaulter Steve Hooker, it's the final chance for three others.

Tamsyn Manou, Lachlan Renshaw and Fabrice Lapierre have until Monday to take advantage of the Australian Olympic Committee's extended qualifying deadline.

As she awaits the outcome of her appeal against non-selection, Manou will be in Belgium hoping to put the issue beyond doubt by running the 800m qualifying time of 1 minute 59.90 seconds.

Aiming for her fourth Olympics, Manou's appeal was heard by Athletics Australia on Wednesday.

She's changed her plans of running in Madrid, opting instead for the KBC Night of Athletics in Heusden to pit herself against Kenyan Olympic champion Pamela Jelimo in a bid to go under the A-qualifier.

Manou won the 800m at a low key meeting in Belgium last week, but her winning time of 2:03.65 was well short of the qualifying standard.

On Thursday in Europe she ran a personal best over 600m in Liege, Belgium of 1:25.7.

Likewise, Renshaw is hoping to be dragged along by a lightning 800m field in Paris, including world champion David Rudisha who has vowed to break his world record on Friday night.

Renshaw won the men's 800m at the Lillestrom Grand Prix in Norway on Tuesday in 1:50.81, although he recorded a 1:46.45 last week, still shy of the 1:45.60 A-qualifier.

Former world indoor long jump champion Lapierre is not yet entered for any of the weekend meetings, but needs to compete if he wants to get to London.

He tweeted on Friday morning, “Injuries suck! Just when you start getting back into the rhythm too.”

Former world discus champion Samuels makes her European debut for the season in a strong field led by German Nadine Muller who has the world's biggest throw this year of 68.89m.

In the men's javelin in Paris, Queenslander Jarrod Bannister will compete for the first time since pleading guilty to drink driving offences in a Brisbane court last month.

And Watt competes in the long jump for the first time since his win in the New York Diamond League last month.

The Australian Olympic Team currently stands at 405 athletes with only Equestrian - Dressage, Jumping and any additional track and field athletes to be finalised by 8 July.
