Australia's female gymnasts have achieved their No.1 goal, securing a berth in the teams event at the London Olympics thanks to a dazzling effort in qualifying at the world championships in Tokyo.
Led by Commonwealth Games golden girl Lauren Mitchell, the Australians finished sixth in qualifying after the opening two days in the Japanese capital, the effort earning them a place in the teams final at the championships.
The top eight teams also earn direct entry to the London Games, which was the main pre-tournament aim for coach Peggy Liddick, who was impressed with what she saw on the opening night when they tallied 221.846 points to trail only Romania in the teams event.
They were then forced to sit and wait as superpowers US, Russia and China entered the fray on Saturday night, Australia holding on for sixth to book a berth in Tuesday's teams final, finishing just over 12 points behind top qualifiers US.
Mitchell and Emily Little also secured starts in the all-around final, Mitchell qualifying 10th overall with a total of 56.324 with Little 17th on 54.732, Russian Victoria Komova the top qualifier with a total of 60.157.
Unless their is a withdrawl Mitchell will not get a chance to defend her floor world title as she sits as first reserve for the apparatus final. No other Australian women made apparatus finals.
Men's qualifying will begin on Sunday with the Australians not in action until Monday night after being drawn in sub-division seven.
The men - who finished 18th at last year's world championships - are hoping to move into the top 16 to secure a berth at the test event in London in January when another four teams will battle to qualify for the Olympics.
They have been drawn in the same group as Canada and Russia.
