Aussie men to face USA as Rio basketball draw released

At the official draw in Switzerland conducted by FIBA early Saturday morning AEDT, the shape of the tournament became clear as the men's and women's pools were selected.

BASKETBALL: At the official draw in Switzerland conducted by FIBA early Saturday morning AEDT, the shape of the tournament became clear as the men's and women's pools were selected.

The Australian men were drawn into Group A alongside the USA, Venezuela, China and two qualifying teams yet to be decided.

This will mean the Boomers will face the USA on August 10, China on August 12 and Venezuela on August 14 with games on August 6 and August 8 to be decided at a later date.

The Aussie men faced both China and the USA at the London 2012 Games. Australia's 81-61 victory over the Chinese in the group stage saw them set up a quarter-final clash with the gold medal favourites.

Team USA were too strong in the quarter-finals securing a 119-86 victory before going on to win the gold medal. The 2016 draw however ensures that if Australia move through to the finals stage of the competition, the earliest they could face the US side will be in the semi-finals.

The Aussie women have also been drawn into Group A in their tournament, pitting them against Japan, Brazil and three unknown qualifiers in the pool stage.

Their current schedule sees them play Brazil on August 6 and Japan on August 11 while their other three matches will be played on either August 7 or 8 and then August 9 and August 13.

Australia faced the 2016 Games hosts at London 2012 in the group stage where they came away with a 67-61 win with Lauren Jackson leading the way with 18 points. Australia went on to win the bronze medal.
