Aussie sailors at it again in Singapore

Australia’s sailors Mark Spearman and Madison Kennedy were again in action today as they competed in the penultimate day of the Singapore 2010 sailing competition.

Australia’s sailors Mark Spearman and Madison Kennedy were again in action today as they competed in the penultimate day of the Singapore 2010 sailing competition.

Both Spearman, 14th, and Kennedy, 20th, slipped slightly down the rankings as they completed races nine through eleven of the regatta.

Singapore’s National Sailing Centre served up erratic conditions again as it played havoc with the fleet, as today’s start was delayed by over an hour, before a lack of winds in the afternoon foiled any attempts of catching up any of the races previously cancelled.

When races did get under way, in what were choppy conditions, the Aussies were unable to put the pressure on their competitors and jump up the overall rankings.

Spearman struggled in the day’s first race as he recorded his worst result so far, coming in 26th, before improving throughout the day, claiming 16th in race ten and 12th in race eleven, to ensure he was still in with a shot at pushing into the top ten by the end of competition tomorrow.

Kennedy remained in the second half of the field in all three races, coming in 23rd, 20th and 24th.

In the overall women's standings Austria's Lara Vadlau leads the pack, followed by Germany and Denmark, while in the men's Virgin Islands sailor Ian Burrows heads off Germany and Finland leading into the final day.

Tomorrows racing features the medal race, with double points on offer and the opportunity for both the Aussies to improve their overall positions.
