The Australia women’s skeleton squad has made a promising start to international competition, posting two top 15 places in an America’s Cup event in Calgary, Canada.

The Australia women’s skeleton squad has made a promising start to international competition, posting two top 15 places in an America’s Cup event in Calgary, Canada.

Emma Lincoln-Smith was the best of the Australian debutantes, placing 11th in a field of 40 sliders, with team-mate Melissa Hoar in 13th place.

The event was won by Canadian Carla Tavan in a time of 1 minute 59.32 seconds. Lincoln-Smith was 2.09 seconds behind, with Hoar .45 of a second further back

Although none of the other eight Australians made the 20 woman second run, several recorded top ten starting times and good placings in the top half of the course before driving errors put them back in the field.

The Australian skeleton squad was formed in August by the Australian Institute of Sport, recruiting athletes from a range of sports.

Hoar, 21, is a two-time world beach flag champion while Lincoln-Smith, 18, is a former 400m runner and surfer. The squad also includes former world waterskiing champion Emma Sheers.

A second America’s Cup event will be held at the Canada Olympic Park venue tomorrow.
