In a thrilling match, the Australian Open Women’s softball team was able to overcome a late charge by Canada Elite on day three of the 2006 Canada Cup in Vancouver, winning 5-4 in the last inning of play.

Australia took an early lead in the bottom of the first with Simmone Morrow, Natalie Titcume and Tracey Mosley scoring.

Canada Elite were quick to reply in the top of the second and then took a 4-3 lead in the fifth.

Kelly Hardie pitched well with Catherine Bishop relieving her in the fifth and then three-time Olympian and co-captain, Tanya Harding on the mound in the sixth and seventh innings managed to hold the Canada Elite bats.

Scores were level going into the bottom of the seventh with Australia’s Danielle Stewart stepping up to the plate. With two out and a runner on second, Stewart hit a triple to score Mosley and win the game.

Australia plays Japan – Denso Club at 1.30pm (AEST) on Wednesday 5 July in Day 4 of play.
