Australia's shooters are well positioned to press for berths in tomorrow's men's and women's Trap finals after all four athletes enjoyed solid day one qualification rounds in sweltering conditions today.
Rio 2016 women’s Trap finalist, Laetisha Scanlan, led the way with a total score of 73 after the first three rounds of 25 targets to be placed fifth, one position ahead of sixth place team-mate Penny Smith, who registered a score of 72.
James Willett also tallied a score of 72 to be placed 15th after the first three of five rounds in the men’s Trap while Olympic debutant, Tom Grice, was one point behind on 71 and is placed 24th.
But little separates the men’s field with all 29 athletes hitting 69 targets and above.
There will be two further rounds of 25 targets tomorrow morning before the top six qualifiers proceed to the final.
A highlight for each of the Australians was that all four shot one confidence-boosting clean round of 25 targets.

Shotgun head coach Richard Sammon was pleased with the opening day performances.
“It was a really good day today. The girls have started really well and both men are still well in contention,” said Sammon.
“There conditions were really good in the first round and that’s why we saw a lot of scores of 25. But the last two rounds were quite challenging with the heat and the light.
“I’m excited to see what tomorrow brings. Tonight is about relaxing, recovering and unwinding and getting a good night’s sleep,” he added.
Grice began his Olympic campaign in the best possible manner recording a faultless 25 points and finished with rounds of 22 and 24.
“I have a bit of mixed feeling about today really, but there something there to work with,” said Grice.
“I was very happy with my start but being here is also a highlight being my first Games. It’s crazy to be among a field that is this strong,” he added.

Grice and fellow Games debutant Penny Smith prepared for the Olympics with a week-long training camp in Darwin, but this couldn’t replicate the extreme Tokyo weather conditions experienced at the Asaka Range today.
“The heat is a distraction and its very easy to get distracted when you are under stress and fatigued. And the added heat makes is more of a distraction,” said Grice.
Also in competition tomorrow is Elena Galiabovitch who will contest the women’s 25m Pistol event.
