Australia have claimed all four teams events on offer at the at the all-important 2016 Oceania Championships in Ballarat.

TABLE TENNIS: Australia have claimed all four teams events on offer at the at the all-important 2016 Oceania Championships in Ballarat.

The Aussies claimed both the men’s and women’s divisions with wins over New Zealand in both events while also taking out both the U21 competitions.

Kane Townsend opened the men’s account after winning a tough five-setter against Lin Yi-Sien before his brother Wade made it 2-0 with a four set win over Craig Dye.

Needing just one more victory to claim the title, the New Zealanders weren’t going to give up without a fight. Aussie Erny Tsao dominated the first set, taking it 1-11, before he eventually went down in five sets to Matthew Ball.

Yi-Sien then defeated Wade Townsend in four before it was up to his brother to get Australia home. Despite going down 10-12 in the first set he claimed the next three sets to give Australia the hard fought 3-2 victory.

The Aussie women didn’t have to sweat as much as their male counterparts as four-time Olympian Miao Miao beat Natalie Paterson in four before Peng Kai knocked off Ruofei Rao in five sets.

Sarah Tan then bounced back from losing the opening set to defeat Armindeep Singh in four to give Australia the comfortable 3-0 win.

Earlier in the day the men’s singles competition got underway where Australia again dominated proceedings.

Needing to have two men in the top three to qualify a team for Rio, the Aussies went undefeated across six matches.

David Powell didn’t drop a set against both Gregoire Dossier of Tahiti and Seluka Resture of Tuvalu, while Heming Hu won both his matches 4-0 as did Chris Yan Xin.

Playing only one match on the day, Kane and Wade Townsend both opened their accounts with straight sets wins.

The men’s competition continues on Wednesday while the women’s gets underway.
