CYCLING - TRACK: Matthew Glaetzer's (SA) men's sprint gold and third fastest 'Flying 200m' in history punctuated a successful start for Australia to the 2014/15 UCI Track World Cup Series.

CYCLING - TRACK: Matthew Glaetzer's (SA) men's sprint gold and third fastest 'Flying 200m' in history punctuated a successful start for Australia to the 2014/15 UCI Track World Cup Series.

As per the UCI Track World Championships and Glasgow Commonwealth Games held earlier this year, Australia once again topped a track cycling medal tally after finishing the three-day competition in Mexico with three gold, two silver and one bronze.

Australia collected three medals on the final day including Glaetzer's gold, omnium silver to 2012 world champion Glenn O’Shea (SA) and keirin bronze to two-time world champion Anna Meares (SA/Jayco-AIS).

In the overall World Cup Nations ranking Australia has taken an early lead over traditional track rivals Great Britain and Germany.

The next round of the World Cup series will be in London from 5-7 December.

FINALS DAY 1 WRAP:

Australia sits atop of the medal tally after collecting two gold and one silver medal on the second day of competition, the first of finals, at the UCI Track World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico, on Saturday. 

Olympic medallist Kaarle McCulloch (NSW) announced her comeback in a big way, teaming with Stephanie Morton (SA) to claim Australia's first gold of the event in the women's team sprint.

Australia's youthful team pursuiting stocks were on full display with a dominant performance by teenagers Sam Welsford (WA), Daniel Fitter (QLD), Alex Porter (SA), plus 20-year-old Miles Scotson (SA) and Glenn O'Shea (SA) ensuring Australia's second gold of the night.

Matthew Glaetzer (SA) claimed Australia's third medal of the day with silver in the keirin.

In other events, reigning Olympic champion Anna Meares (SA) posted the second fastest Flying 200m time of her illustrious career in qualfying for the women's sprint, eventually finishing fifth in the event.

The 2014/15 UCI Track World Cup series features over 200 of world's best track cyclists competing across three rounds for points towards World Championships and Rio 2016 Olympic Games qualification.
