WATER POLO: The Australian women’s and men’s Water Polo teams will take on the USA this weekend in Los Angeles as part of their USA tour.

The double header on Sunday 22 May will be televised live on NBC and is expected to attract a full house, providing both the Aussies with solid preparations ahead of the Rio Games.

The men’s team have been in LA training on the back of the World League Tournament in Japan where they suffered a narrow one-point loss to the USA in the gold medal final.

In the women’s there has been a mixed bag of results between the two sides over the last 12 months when they have faced off, with both sides considered the likely Rio gold medallist.

Water Polo Australia High Performance Manager Tom Hill said Australia and USA have shared a healthy rivalry in water polo for many years and this weekend’s double header will be no different.

“The double header will be a great test match for both sides as it will provide the teams with big game atmosphere as well as the added pressure of live television. We can expect some exciting water polo action,” he said.

“There is no secret that in the women’s the USA and Australia have consistently been ranked in the top three for the past 15 years.  The USA training camp kick starts the Aussie Stingers tour ahead of the World League Final in China next month, after which our team for the Olympic Games will be selected.

“For our men, they’ll be out for redemption after losing to the USA is the last two seconds of the World League Tournament gold medal match. The USA camp caps off a three week tour for our men’s side, which has been an important part of their Rio preparations.

“With only 78 days until the Olympic Games the stakes are high for all our players who will be out to impress coaches ahead of final team selection,” said Hill.
