A world class Hungary outfit demonstrated why they are regarded one of the best in the world after a strong performance against an in form Brazil side 10-6.
The win unfortunately means that Australia will not progress through to the Quarter Finals of the Rio Olympic Games after finishing fifth in their pool.
The boys finished off the competition in complete style with an impressive 12-7 win over Greece.
After the match with Greece, Coach Elvis Fatovic praised him team’s side on a solid performance.
"I’m happy with the performance of my players because it’s not easy to step up after the game with Serbia, which I think we played even better than we played today." Fatovic said.
“We played better on this tournament every game and that’s a signal to us that we need more and more games to have more experiences in a situation like this.”
With such a close competition in the pool stages, Australia needed Brazil to topple Hungary by more than two and/or Japan to beat Serbia in their games tonight, but unfortunately that didn't go to plan.
However they ended their Olympic campaing with a strong defensive game today demonstrating just what the Australians are known for.
Captain Rhys Howden said the team were determined to come out and give it their all today, and do it not just for the team but also for their family and friends in the stands.
“I think today we came out and definitely wanted to put in a good show," said Howden.
"It was very disappointing coming off the loss to Serbia.
"We still wanted to come out today and put in a good effort."
Leading Aussie goal scorer Aaron Younger said he was not quite sure he would be able to watch the games as the Aussie team hung on to the glimmer of hope.
“Probably won’t watch to be honest. I don’t think I can handle it, we’ll see how I go. I’ll wait for the phone to ring I think,” laughedYounger.
“It was good to win finally but really we peaked a bit late in the tournament. I mean really, that first game was the big one and now we’re relying on other results so we’ve got to sit with our fingers crossed.
“We definitely improved throughout the week. It was just a bit unfortunate we weren’t there for the first game when we really needed to be.
“I think we’re definitely one of the toughest teams out there. We just came out to be a bit of skill on the day, we weren’t hitting the shots we usually hit and they were hitting the shots they don’t usually hit as well.
“We’re one of the most physical teams around and most mentally tough."
Australia came out strong against the Greeks, taking a commanding lead of 10-4 at half time. While Greece fought back in the second half and managed to put up a strong defence against the Aussies, there was no taking away from strong form from the Aussies
