Australia will play Russia for the bronze medal at the FINA women’s water polo World League Super Finals in Cosenza, Italy tomorrow.

The Aussies, pipped Canada 6-5 to make the medal decider and take on Russia, last year’s runner-up, who beat the Netherlands 9-8.

Australia won the bronze medal in Kirishi, Russia last year.

World No 2 the United States of America and Olympic champion Italy will play for the gold medal.

In a spirited game with Canada, the Australians led 1-0 at the quarter but were 2-1 behind at halftime.

A 3-1 third period put Commonwealth champion Australia in the box seat to hold on for the victory, thus turning the result of two weeks ago in the semifinals where Canada won in a penalty shootout.

Australia’s defensive skills meant Canada failed on all its seven attempts to score when a player up while Australia managed two from eight.

Head coach Greg McFadden said: “After two training camps and numerous games recently, both teams have a good knowledge of each other’s game. Hence, this game was always going to be a tight tussle.

“To Canada's credit they made the most of their opportunities while we seemed to lack the confidence to convert ours. Many girls seemed like they were questioning their ability and it was up to one of our youngest players to help lead the team. This was Patrice O'Neill who scored one goal and created numerous opportunities for her team-mates.

“Perhaps the significance of this game made the girls put themselves under extra pressure, which hopefully in the future will teach them to be more relaxed in similar circumstances,” he said.

Melissa Rippon scored twice with her sister Rebecca, Suzie Fraser, Kate Gynther and Patrice O’Neill all scoring once.
