Five Australian figure skaters will compete in the Karl Schaefer Memorial Trophy in Vienna in October, attempting to secure spots for their country in the Torino Olympic Games.

Sean Carlow in the men’s competition, Natalie Buck and Trent Nelson-Bond in ice dancing and Emma Brien and Stuart Beckingham in the pairs earned the right to represent Australia at the Olympic qualifying event after winning their respective national championship events in August this year in Perth.

Carlow must place in the top six in the men’s event, Buck and Nelson-Bond in the top five and Brien and Beckingham in the top three to gain Australian spots in the 2006 Games field.

Nagano Olympian Joanne Carter has already secured a ladies spot for the Australian team after finishing in 16th place at the 2005 World Figure Skating Championships in Moscow in February this year.

The Karl Schaefer memorial runs from October 12-16.
