Rugby 7s Icing the Cake

Few people would expect top women’s rugby players to be baking cakes as part of their final preparation for the Paris Olympic Games.

But for the Australian Sevens team this could be the recipe for Olympic gold.

While it may seem crazy to some, the activity in the final stages of their team training camp is essential to the team’s culture.

In the lead-up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Australian Women's Rugby Sevens team has been perfecting their game with a focus on team unity.

This year, the team’s journey is encapsulated in the metaphor of baking a cake.

Captain and triple Olympian Charlotte Caslick told the world media it's time to “ice the cake” symbolising their final preparations to achieve Olympic glory.

Spearheaded by coach and former Sevens international player Tim Walsh, who led Australia to victory at the Rio Games, this effort emphasises the importance of unity, support and shared goals among the players.

Their motto, inspired by the Edith Piaf song "Non, je ne regrette rien," reflects their commitment to leaving no stone unturned in their quest for gold.

This dedication to preparation and cohesion has been embraced by the players.

“We've been talking about how we've made our cake and now we're icing it,” Charlotte said.

“Our coach definitely does have lots of activities and fun team-building exercises. We decorated some cakes the other day in the shape of Olympic rings.

"When we get out there we just play without any fear, and we just want to have fun, and we play our best footy together when we're smiling and enjoying ourselves on and off the field.

The squad, which includes seasoned fellow triple Olympian Sharni Smale, as well as fresh talent in sisters Teagan and Maddison Levi, has shown remarkable synergy and determination.

Having recently won the World Series title after a triumphant final leg in Madrid, the team has built a solid foundation and gained momentum.

The victory, particularly the statement-making semifinal win against New Zealand, has instilled confidence and reinforced their position as top contenders for the Olympic gold.

With the competition kicking off on Sunday, the Women's Rugby Sevens team is now focusing on the final touches.

This stage involves refining strategies, honing skills, and ensuring every team member is in peak physical and mental condition.

Tim’s innovative coaching approach has also played a crucial role in their preparation.

In addition to these fun activities, the team has been training under various scenarios to prepare for every possible situation.

"He's had us training with noise-cancelling headphones on with headgear over the top,” Charlotte said.

“We couldn't hear each other and had to communicate with hand signals or read each other's lips because the Stade de France is going to be a full house over the course of our tournament.”

They have mixed the ingredients, baked the cake, and now, with their final preparations, they are ready to ice it.

The women’s competition kicks off on Sunday 28 July at the Stade de France.
