Tokyo 2020 - Women's Rugby 7s Final

RUGBY SEVENS: The Australian Women's sevens team has finished in fifth position at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, defeating both the Russian Olympic Committee and the USA in their final two matches of the Olympic Games.

The 2016 Olympic Champions were quick to rectify their day two errors and finish the tournament on a high.

Australia 35 defeated Russian Olympic Committee 7

Australia bounced back from its day two results, defeating the Russian Olympic Committee 35-7 in their opening match of day three.

The game was off to a perfect start, with Faith Nathan finding a gap in the Russian defence to open up an onslaught of tries from the Australian side.

Emma Tonegato crossed next for the Australians in her fourth try of the tournament before Elina Zdrokova scored for Russia on the bell of halftime.

Emma Tonegato opened the Australian attack in the second half, crossing for her second try of the match, before Sariah Paki dove over for a try of her own.

Maddison Levi cemented Australia’s win over the Russians with a late try on full-time securing Australia’s opening win of the day.

Australia 17 defeated USA 7

Australia ended their day three campaign on a high, defeating USA 17 – 7 in the fifth place playoff at Tokyo Stadium.

The next generation of stars in Demi Hayes, Madison Ashby and Faith Nathan broke the USA defence to secure the victory as Australia looks to the future.

While the US applied constant pressure to the Australian defence, it remained strong, eventually resulting in a turnover which saw Faith Nathan find space to open up the scoring for Australia.

The Australians continued to build with Maddison Ashby next to break down the wing, crossing for Australia’s second try on the cusp of halftime.

The Aussies regained possession from the kick off as they gave America little chance to attack with ball in hand. It was American Kirsti Kirshe who cherished a rare American moment with the ball, to reduce the margin to three points.

However, the Australians remained strong with Demi Hayes finding another chink in the American armour to cross for Australia’s third try.

America pushed for a consolation try, however Evania Pelite won the turnover to secure the win and fifth place for Australia.

Australian Women’s Sevens Head Coach John Manenti said: “I’m really proud of the way the girls bounced back today.

“The nature of sport is you don’t always get a return on your investment; these results are not reflective of this.

“Losing two games by two points against quality opposition tells us that the women’s sevens game has never been stronger all around the world.

“Furthermore, with six players 21 or under, the future is bright for our program as well.

“It’s going to be a big few years for our women’s team; while they’re young, we’ll continue to grow into next year’s commonwealth games, the Rugby World Cup 7s and then the 2024 Paris Olympics.”
