CANOE/KAYAK: London Olympian Jo Brigden-Jones will be racing for her Rio Olympic future on Friday night when the first sprint canoe World Cup gets underway in Duisburg, Germany.

Brigden-Jones and her K2 500 teammate and fellow Olympian, Naomi Flood, are both racing for the one remaining spot on the team for Rio, and it will come down to results this weekend.

Brigden-Jones will race in the heats of the K1 200 on Friday night, while Flood will contest the heats of the K1 500 on Saturday.

Whoever finishes with the best result in their event will likely get their name forwarded to the Australian Olympic Committee.

The race-off is necessary after Brigden-Jones and Flood finished the domestic qualifying season equal.

Australia has only qualified three women for Rio, and after Flood and Brigden-Jones were upstaged by Queensland’s Alyssa Bull and Alyce Burnett in the K2 500, it left just one spot on the team.

Bull and Burnett will also race on Friday night in the K2 500, while two-time World Championship silver medallists Lachlan Tame and Ken Wallace will contest the heats of the men’s K2 1000.

Perth’s Daniel Bowker will contest the heats of the K1 1000.

Australia will also put a new look men’s K4 1000 crew on the water this weekend, with Jacob Clear teaming up with Wallace, Jordan Wood and Riley Fitzsimmons, with more changes likely before the final crew to defend the London gold medal in Rio is decided.
