The Australian women’s 4x100m medley relay team have come from lane eight to steal silver in 3:50.88 on night three of the short course World Championships in Istanbul.

The final team had Rachel Goh leading off in the backstroke, Sarah Katsoulis in the breaststroke, Marieke Guehrer swimming butterfly and freestyler Angie Bainbridge to bring them home.

Dual Olympian Bainbridge dug deep for the relay team, taking on three finals for Australia,  the 100m freestyle, the 400m freestyle and the 4x100m medley relay.

She started the night with a blistering 100m freestyle final that saw her finish in fifth place with a time of 53.09. The 23-year-old then backed up for the final of the women’s 400m freestyle where her front end speed saw her in the mix through to the halfway point and eventually hitting the wall in 4:04.07 for sixth place.

Amazingly, Bainbridge still had enough left in the tank to anchor the women’s 4x100m medley relay team to silver behind Denmark (3:49.87) and ahead of America in (3:51.43)

Australia is now sitting on two silver and one bronze medal at the end of night three.

After swimming the final leg in the men’s Australian record breaking and silver medal winning, 4x200m freestyle relay last night, Robert Hurley has broken his own Australian record in the semi-final of the men’s 50m backstroke and will go through as fastest qualifier to the splash and dash final.

Hurley hit the wall in 23.14, 0.10 faster than the previous record from 2008 to take his second Australian record for the meet following his role in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay record.

The 24-year-old will go through in equal first position with defending champion Stanislav Donets (23.14) from Russia. Australia’s Ashley Delaney will also progress after sneaking into the top eight with a time of 23.60.

Breaststroke bronze medallist Katsoulis will be looking to add to her medal collection in the final of the women’s 100m breaststroke.

The Victorian is in fine form, clocking a 1:03.89 in the medley relay which would have seen her take top position going into the 100m breaststroke final.

Fellow breaststroker Samantha Marshall finished the semi-finals in 11th spot with a 1:06.48.

FINA World Cup Champion Kenneth To fought hard in the final of the men’s 200m individual medley to take fourth spot in a new personal best time of 1:53.42.

Multiple Olympic medallist and short course specialist Ryan Lochte broke away from the field early and couldn’t be caught despite desperate efforts from To, the silver medallist from Japan Daiya Seto (1:52.80) and Hungary’s bronze medallist Laszlo Cseh (1:52.89).

Lochte, who was half a body length ahead of world record pace from the first turn, eventually hit the wall in 1:49.63 to break his own short course world record from 2010.
