Ban fireworks from Olympics – It’s no joke

Banning fireworks from the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games is not a laughing matter- the International Olympic Committee will seriously consider the proposal.

Banning fireworks from the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games is not a laughing matter- the International Olympic Committee will seriously consider the proposal.

The Sri Lankan Olympic Committee has raised the idea because of damage caused to the environment. The Sri Lankans want the harmful emissions replaced by laser shows.

“We will look at it seriously,” said IOC President Jacques Rogge.

He has asked for more information on the carbon footprint of fireworks.

"It is not a trivial matter, doves used to be released as a symbol of peace at Opening Ceremonies but many doves were burned to death in the cauldron in Seoul in 1988 and we stopped doing it.”

London Olympic organisers haven't yet discussed fireworks for the 2012 ceremonies.
