Dale Begg-Smith has moved several steps closer to defending his World Cup title after a dual moguls victory and another fourth placing in Japan over the weekend.

Begg-Smith claimed his third win for the season in dual moguls, qualifying first then subsequently taking the gold medal after fog prevented any further action on the Inawashiro course.

Finnish skier Mikkko Ronkainen claimed the silver medal, with French skier Guilbaut Colas taking the bronze.

A day earlier, the Torino gold medallist had finished in fourth place in single moguls, to stretch his lead in the World Cup title chase over Colas.

With two events remaining in the season, Begg-Smith leads the standings on 484 points, 83 ahead of Colas on 401.

US skier Nathan Roberts sits in third place on 328 points, with the rest of the field now out of contention for the crystal globe.

The World Championships, postponed from late January to early March in Madonna di Campiglio, will follow the World Cup from March 6 to 10.
