Low scores on his jumps have relegated Dale Begg-Smith to sixth place in the opening event of the 2007/08 moguls skiing World Cup in Tignes, France. The defending champion was the quickest down the course and had the second highest points for his turns, but also had the lowest jump score of the 12 finalists by a significant margin.

Begg-Smith finished on 23.95 points, 1.09 points behind the winner, Pierre-Alexandre Rousseau of Canada.

Rousseau, who took the gold medal ahead of Begg-Smith in last season’s World Championship, scored 25.04 points, with Finland’s Tapio Luusua in second place on 24.41 points and another Canadian, Alexandre Bilodeau, in third place on 24.36 points.

Begg-Smith’s Olympic Winter Institute team-mate Ramone Cooper finished outside the final in 23rd position on a score of 22.03 points, a slow time down the hill hurting his chances of a better result.

The Australians will now take a month-long break before the next event in Lake Placid on January 18.
