Lachlan Hay likened it to being the same as a kid on Christmas whilst Tatiana Borodulina described it as incredibly proud – being presented with their Olympic gear upon their arrival in Vancouver today.
After an intense training program in Calgary, both skaters are ready to race.
But firstly, there’s life in the Village to soak in first.
Hay has been following the story of the first arrivals via olympics.com.au, and his family back in Australia have been updating him on the ongoing Boxing Kangaroo flag controversy.
“Firstly when I get to the Village I want to see BK and get a photo done that’s for sure,” Hay said.
“I can’t wait to settle in and be around the other athletes and see some friends – but it’s all about business – I’m here to race and do my best and that’s what it is all about from here,” Hay added.
For Borodulina it has been a different journey to the Olympic Village in Vancouver – via Russia and the Australian Army.
The 25-year-old competed for Russia in Torino and made the Olympic final – but a move to Australia has seen her improve – both on and off the ice.
“It has been the best move ever for me,” Borodulina admits.
“Moving to Australia and becoming an Australian citizen has made me a better person, and I love representing Australia.”
Borodulina revealed that one of the major changes was a change to her competing colours – a change from the Russian colours she has worn for the past 10 years.
“I’ve had 3 years to get used to the green and gold colours and I have to say I quite like them,” she giggled.
“Trying on the suit I will race in was very special – I can’t wait to get on the ice.”
