Torah Bright has beaten the best halfpipe riders in the world to win the prestigious Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado.

Bright out-rode Torino gold medallist Hannah Teter, silver medallist Gretchen Bleiler, 2002 Olympic champion Kelly Clark and reigning world champion Manuela Pesko to claim her first X Games title in a brilliant display of halfpipe skills.

The Cooma-born 20-year-old qualified in fifth place with a best score of 74.00 points, 14 below Bleiler's best of 88 points.

But in the final the Australian came up trumps, delivering a competition high 94.66 points on her second run to defeat Bleiler by 3.66 points.

Another American, Elena Hight, took the bronze medal on 88 points.

The event was the first since the 2006 Olympic Games to pit all of the world's top riders against each other, making Bright's victory over the four women  who beat her in Torino all the sweeter.
