Bulleen Boomers centre Elizabeth Cambage has capped off a dream Women’s National Basketball League season by clinching the 2010/11 Most Valuable Player Award.
Accepting the award at the MVP Dinner at Crown Casino’s Palladium on Monday night, April 4, the esteemed honour is a tribute to Cambage’s dominant season, which was punctuated by numerous highlights, none more memorable than her side’s WNBL Championship victory.
Cambage was a key figure in Bulleen’s success right from the opening tip, leading the league in scoring with 22.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, while swatting 2.8 shots per game, making her a nightmare opponent for fellow bigs throughout the competition.
After dropping the first two games of the season, Cambage led Bulleen’s resurgence as they recovered to claim the best record in the WNBL, sealing the Minor Championship with 19 wins and three losses.
For the second straight season, Cambage played in every Boomers’ game, including an impressive finals campaign that saw the team put two seasons of disappointment behind them, going all the way to clinch a memorable championship win over the Canberra Capitals.
Cambage claimed three Player of the Week Awards throughout the season, along with two Player of the Month awards for the months of November and December, making her an instant favourite to clinch the season’s MVP Award.
Previous winners of the award include the 2010 winner and Australian Opals playmaker Kristi Harrower, along with Lauren Jackson, Katrina Hibbert, Penny Taylor, Sandy Brondello, Rachael Sporn, Alison Tranquilli and Robyn Maher.
Cambage’s star is set to continue to rise this week, as she heads for the WNBA Draft in Connecticut, to be held at 5am on Tuesday April 12, AEST where she is expected to be claimed in the first or second pick.
After a season in the WNBA, Cambage is expected to return to the WNBL as its most valuable player, in a bid to help Bulleen defend their title.
