Australian Basketball rising star and Australian Opal Elizabeth Cambage has been selected at number two overall in America’s Women’s National Basketball Association draft in Bristol Connecticut this morning.
The 19-year-old Cambage was selected by club Tulsa Shock ahead of the 2011 WNBA season, which tips off in June, after she enjoyed a dominant campaign in the Australian Women’s National Basketball League this year.
Cambage was the League’s leading scorer and shot blocker in season 2010/11 of the WNBL. She enjoyed the League’s best field goal percentage, claimed the Most Valuable Player Award, was selected into the WNBL All-star Five and led her side, the Bulleen Boomers, to their first-ever WNBL Championship.
At 203cm tall, the Opals representative is the youngest and tallest player in this year’s historic draft for Australian basketball, making her an exciting prospect for any club.
Tulsa Shock, who came to Australia to see Cambage play late in this year’s WNBL regular season, selected her after American top-prospect Maya Moore was chosen number one by Minnesota Lynx.
Among her teammates at the Shock include ex-track and field athlete Marion Jones, and three-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time WNBA MVP Sheryl Swoopes.
Also chosen was Liz Cambage’s Bulleen Boomers teammate Rachel Jarry, who was selected at number 18 in the second round of the WNBA draft by Atlanta Dream.
