Olympic Winter Institute skier, Alisa Camplin, celebrated Australia Day by winning the aerials event at Fernie, Canada, continuing her domination of the Freestyle World Cup.
It is Camplin’s fourth win for the season from seven starts and the Mt Buller skier remains the number one ranked aerialist in the world with five rounds of the FIS World Cup remaining.
The reigning Olympic, World and World Cup champion once again set up her victory with a superb first jump. Her full, double full (a triple twisting double somersault) scored 101.17 points from the judges. While her second jump (double full, full) scored only 76.32 points due to a faulty landing, it brought her total to 177.49, enough to give her a 10-point victory over Canadian Veronica Bauer.
Fellow Flying Kangaroo, Liz Gardner, produced the best result of her career to finish in third place with a score of 163.85. She was in fifth place after the qualifying round but then produced a triple twisting double somersault for the first time in competition to score 87.15 points and move on to the podium.
Rookie Lainie Cole finished tenth. It was the first time that the Melbourne skier and former gymnast had qualified for a World Cup final.
Lydia Ierodiaconou was in second place after the first jump with a score of 88.21, but failed to land her second jump and slipped back to 11th place. The crash left the world number two dazed and she was taken to hospital for observation.
The fifth team member, Trudy McIntosh, finished 15th in the first round and missed the cut-off for a second jump.
Conditions in the Canadian resort were extremely tough today with scores from all competitors well below average. The wind was strong, the sky overcast and the temperature, at minus seven degrees celsius, cold.
Alisa Camplin Quotes from Fernie, Canada
“I’m delighted with the way I have been jumping and I was really on fire today. My first round jump was one of my best ever but the day took a nasty turn when Lyd (Lydia Ierodiaconou) crashed. It was tough being at the top, the last one to jump, hearing that she had been injured but still having to compete.”
“I had to wait in the start gate for about half an hour so in the end it was good to get a jump down and to get the win.”
“I never expected to be four wins from five in the northern hemisphere part of the season and I’m really surprised with the quality of my jumping.”
“But today was a sweet and sour day for the team. It was great to be there and share Lizzie’s (Liz Gardner) first podium but it was really hard for us to get excited knowing that Lyd was in hospital.”
Report on Lydia Ierodiaconou
Lydia Ierodiaconou crashed heavily on landing on her second jump at the World Cup. She was the second last to jump having finished the qualifying round in second place.
Lydia was stretchered off course and taken to the Fernie District Hospital for observation.
