Alisa Camplin has collected her fifth victory for the season, and her third win in three years at the Deer Valley 2002 Winter Olympic course, in another record breaking performance by the Australian Flying Kangaroos team.
Four Australians finished in the top ten of a World Cup for the first time, Lydia Ierodiaconou taking the silver medal, Liz Gardner finishing in fourth place and Trudy McIntosh placing tenth.
Camplin, Ierodiaconou and Gardner now hold the top three places on the World Cup points table, another first for the Australian team.
The result increases Camplin’s lead at the top of the World Cup standings, moving her to 608 points, with Ierodiaconou on 463 and Gardner on 294.
Although the strong Chinese team was absent from the competition, Gardner’s score of 178.19 points would have claimed fourth spot in any event this season, and McIntosh’s 156.74 points rated tenth in all but one event.
Both scores were personal bests.
The bronze medal went to Swiss skier Evelyne Leu. The fifth member of the Australian team, Lainie Cole, finished in 17th place with 65.88 points.
“Today was pretty tough,” Camplin said. “Every week we’re getting closer to the end of the season and I’m conscious of how important the wins are for the World Cup title.”
“Deer Valley has such good memories for me, so I didn’t want to ruin that with a sub-par performance.”
“This place really seems to work for me. Even as a development athlete I performed well here.”
“I’m glad to get the win. Today was the third in the last three visits here, and the third in a row for the season, so it’s a double hat trick if you like.”
“I need a break so badly. I am so exhausted and it has been hard to hold it all together emotionally. I‘m not sure I could have gone another week. Lydia and I are counting on a tropical holiday this week to revive the both of us.”
Despite needing a medical clearance to jump after suffering concussion in a fall last weekend, it was Ierodiaconou who qualified in first place, edging her more decorated team-mate by 98.69 points to 96.02.
Olympic Winter Institute coaches opted for a conservative approach on Ierodiaconou’s second jump, reducing her triple twisting double somersault to a double twisting double manoeuvre.
Camplin, with the more difficult and higher points scoring second trick, was able to outscore her team-mate in the final and take the eighth World Cup victory of her career and fifth of the season.
Alisa now needs one more victory to equal the legendary Kirstie Marshall of Australia and Lina Cheryazova of Uzbekistan, who are the only women to have won six world cup Aerial Skiing events in a single season.
Camplin finished on 189.20 points, with Ierodiaconou on 185.63.
The circuit now takes a two week break before traveling to China for two World Cup competitions, the first to be held in that country, on February 14 and 15. Two further events follow in Europe.
Lydia Ierodiaconou quotes:
I was a bit nervous in training yesterday. I wasn’t sure I was ready and I was a bit tentative. But after the first jumps I got my confidence up and then it was just like normal.
But we decided to keep it safe today. We planned to do just the one triple and then the full full because we knew that would be good enough to get a good result and that’s what happened.
On her shoulder injury:
Because I didn’t train all week, it didn’t get a chance to get banged up. Up to now it hasn’t had time to settle down. It held up well today, and it’s getting better. And the week’s break now will also help.
