Alisa Camplin has capped off a brilliant season by winning the gold medal in the aerial skiing World Cup finals at the 2006 Torino Olympic venue in Sestriere, Italy.
The victory made her just the third woman in freestyle skiing history to claim seven victories in the one season, and gave her a second consecutive World Cup title by a comfortable margin.
Camplin was joined on the podium by team-mate Liz Gardner, the young Victorian winning her second bronze medal for the year and moving up to a career best end of season ranking of eighth in the world.
Swiss veteran Evelyne Leu took the silver medal.
Flying Kangaroo Lydia Ierodiaconou had a day of mixed fortunes, missing the landing on both her jumps to finish in eighth place, but retaining the number two spot on the final World Cup rankings for the second year in a row.
“I’m really relieved to have won today,” Camplin said, as she became the second woman after Jacqui Cooper to win back-to-back World Cup titles.
“When the globe was there to be presented, I didn’t want to take it if I hadn’t produced a good performance on the day.”
“I’m really pleased to end the season on a high.”
“Today gives me seven wins for the season and puts me up with some very prestigious people in the sport.”
“It was a really hard event. But it’s good to get a taste in advance of what it will be like when we come back here for the Torino Olympics.”
Canadian skiers Marie-Claude Asselin and Meredith Gardner are the only other women to take seven victories in a season, both back in the early 1980s.
Camplin was rated a disappointing 83.24 points for her first round effort to sit in third place behind Swiss skier Evelyne Leu and emerging Chinese star Nina Li.
But once again she proved her strength as a competitor, landing a 90 point plus jump in the second round as her nearest rivals struggled to reach the 70 point mark.
The victory was Camplin’s tenth since her breakthrough Olympic Games gold medal in 2002, and the 15th time in 20 consecutive World Cup events she has made the podium.
She ended the season on 948 points, with Ierodiaconou on 679 and Leu on 467.
