New South Wales figure skater Joanne Carter leads the Karl Schaeffer Memorial Figure skating event in Vienna after the short program.

The former Nagano Olympian outperformed a field that included world number 10 Viktoria Volckova of Russia to post one of the best results of her international career.

Hungary’s Dianna Poth is in second place after the short program, with Volckova in third.

In the men’s event, Carter’s New South Wales team-mate Bradley Santer, the Australian men’s figure skating champion, is in sixth place after the short program.

Both Australians will perform their free programs this evening (Saturday evening) Australian time).

Carter, 24, recorded Australia’s best placing at an Olympic Games in Nagano, finishing in 12th position. But a major knee injury in 1998 put her out of competition for almost two years and her results since have not matched her early promise. Carter was runner-up to Miriam Manzano in the Australian National Championships earlier this year.
