GYMNASTICS: China claimed its first gold medal of the gymnastics competition at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF).

GYMNASTICS: China claimed its first gold medal of the gymnastics competition at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF).

On Friday afternoon Huan Luo, Siyi Chen, Jie Mei, and Zhilin Liu persevered to achieve an impressive overall score of 162.963 in the women’s artistic team event.

China went head to head with improving nation Great Britain, who finished with silver (160.064).

Australia Gold’s fresh-faced gymnasts (Alexandra Eade, Eliza Freeman, Rianna Mizzen and Eden Tarvit) took home bronze (150.798), a result that hasn’t broken their spirits for the rest of the festival.

“For some of us, this was our first Australian competition so I think we did really well,” Eade said, who is still recovering from elbow surgery last year.

“There are definitely some things that we want to improve on so we will when we come back on Sunday,” the 15-year-old explained. “We did well encouraging each other.”

The women’s artistic competition lived up to its highly entertaining expectations with crowds cheering for their country to succeed across the beam, floor, vault and uneven bars.
