WEIGHTLIFTING: It was the battle of the Chinese in the women’s 69kg event on Saturday, with Xinyue Wang and Yinyi Shen both vying for top place right until the end.
Wang finished the stronger of the two with a combined total of 250kg and Shen finished with silver on 220kg, followed by the Sandra Reia Ako on 175kg from the Oceania team.
“It feels really good winning gold. I want more and more [medals],” Wang said.
“I will keep training and working hard.”
Shen said she was disappointed to not come away with the gold.
“I wanted the gold medal. I know I can do better,” Shen said.
“I will continue to train and do better for next time.”
Ako from Oceania said she was happy to set personal bests during the competition with her 80kg snatch and 95kg clean and jerk lifts.
“I can do much better than this and my goal is the next Commonwealth Games.”
China continued its dominance with Wang and Shen’s results bringing China’s current weightlifting medal tally to seven in total; five gold, one silver and one bronze. Australian lifters Deanna Bax, Berlyn Hiram and Zoe Simon finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively. Bax finished with a total combined weight of 133kg, Hiram on 108kg and Simon on 99kg.
