Australia’s Flying Kangaroos have had their first day of training for the closing event of the World Cup aerial skiing season in the Italian ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio, just one day before the event is to be run.

With the inrun of the course still below World Cup specifications today (Thursday March 10), none of the men or women in the field has been able to practice triple somersaults, and the women are yet to get up to full degree of difficulty in even their double somersaults.

The first three days of the competition week have been spent with organisers and World Cup coaches trying to rectify the problems caused by a jump site with an inrun neither long enough nor steep enough.

Although the men were able to practise on Wednesday and some of the women had a curtailed practise session, Olympic Winter Institute coach Todd Ossian was unwilling to allow his team to participate.

Liz Gardner and Lainie Cole were both able to perform double twisting double somersaults today, but Jacqui Cooper restricted her efforts to single twisting doubles.

Australia’s top ranking skier, Lydia Ierodiaconou, left the site without jumping at all, uneasy about training conditions.

The event will go ahead on Friday though it may be a restricted degree of difficulty competition (with a competition completion scheduled for 2:30AM Saturday AEDT).
