As we hit the mid-way mark of the Games, Australian’s will be in line for medals in sailing, golf, diving and cycling on Day 9.


Day 9 (Sunday, 14 August)
GOLF – Men’s Round 4 (medals)
Rio time: 08:22 (Scott Hend) & 10:39 (Marcus Fraser), AEST: 21:22 (Scott Hend) & 23:39 (Marcus Fraser)
After three rounds of golf, Marcus Fraser is in line for a historic Olympic medal in golf as medals are decided on Day 4 of the tournament. Ranked 90 in the world, he now sits 3rd at 9 under par, just three strokes behind the leader Justin Rose of Great Britain. Australian team mate, Scott Hend is well down the list, in 36th place, following a challenging third round where he recorded six birdies, four bogeys and one double bogey. (read a preview)

ATHLETICS – Marathon
Rio time: 09:30, AEST: Monday 22:30
Australia has three well credentialed athletes on the line in the women’s marathon. They are three of the top-8 in Australian history and all have run personal bests in the last couple of years. Milly Clark, in just her second serious marathon, is the wildcard for Australia. Lisa Weightman, a bronze medallist at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth games, was 16th in the 2012 London Olympics. Jess Trengove, who ran a lifetime best 10 months ago, was third in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and 11th in the 2013 World Championships.

EQUESTRIAN (Team Jumping Qualification for Round 1)
Rio time: 10:00, AEST: Monday 23:00
Matt Williams (Valinski S), Scott Keach (Fedor), Edwina Tops-Alexander (Lintea Tequila) and James Paterson-Robinson (Amarillo) will contest the first qualifying round of Deodoro Equestrian Centre.

SAILING
Rio time: 13:05, AEST: Monday 02:05
It will be crunch day for the Nacra cousins of Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin, as they complete the final three races of their preliminary series.  The pair are currently leading and will need another good day to secure their position in the Nacra medal race on Tuesday.  Likewise Finn sailor Jake Lilley, who is currently 3rd overall, will be looking for a good result in his final two races in the preliminary series ahead of Tuesday’s medal race. London gold medallist Mat Belcher and Will Ryan are scheduled to complete three races tomorrow, as are 470 Women Carrie Smith and Jaime Ryan. WATER POLO – Men’s Preliminary Australia vs Greece
Rio time: 14:10, AEST: Monday 03:10
Placed 5th in their pool on three points, this is a must-win for Australia against a team they have defeated on three occasions in their six clashes in Olympic history. Needing a top-4 place in their pool, the two teams ahead of Australia have varied prospects of winning. Serbia (on four points) have Japan, who are bottom of the pool, while Hungary (on five points) have Brazil, top of the pool.

DIVING – Women’s 3m Springboard
Rio time: 16:00, AEST: Monday 05:00
Following preliminary and semi-final rounds over the last two days, we get down to business today in the medal round – the final. Aussie Maddison Keeney was fourth in the semi-final behind two Chinese and Canadian Jennifer Abel in third. Joining her in the final is Commonwealth Games champion and fourth placegetter at the 2015 World Championships, Esther Qin who progressed 10th from her semi-final. (read a preview)

CYCLING – Men’s Sprint
Rio time: 17:04, AEST: Monday 06:04
After a close loss to Great Britain’s Callum Skinner in the semi-final, the 2016 World Championships silver medallist, Aussie Matt Glaetzer, will challenge for the bronze medal against Russian Denis Dmitriev, who in February finished third at the 2016 World Championships. (read a preview)

CYCLING – Women’s Sprint
Rio time: 16:00, AEST: Monday 05:00
Anna Meares has won the full set of medals in this event since her first appearance in 2004, but can she add to her collection? Her major competition could be her team mate Stephanie Morton, who was a guide in the tandem event at the 2012 Paralympics. (read a preview)

HOCKEY – Men’s Quarter-Final Australia vs Netherlands
Rio time: 19:00, AEST: Monday 08:00
This is the knockout phase of the Games. Australia are pitted against Holland whom they have met on 12 occasions in Olympic history, resulting in five wins, six losses and a draw. Their last meeting was in the bronze medal match in Beijing (2008), where Australia won 6-2. (watch a video preview with captain Mark Knowles) 

BASKETBALL – Men’s Preliminary Games Australia vs Venezuela
Rio time: 19:00, AEST: Monday 08:00
Australia should lock-up their second place in Pool A with a win over South American side Venezuela. The teams last met in 1992, with a close win to Australia. Australia’s opponents in the next round, are unclear as pool B is too close to call.

ATHLETICS – Women’s 400m and 1500m semi-finals
Rio time: 20:42, AEST: Monday 09:42
Five out of five Aussie in the women’s 400m and 1500m have progressed to the semi-final. In the one lap, Morgan Mitchell and Anneliese Rubie, have both just missed their personals best in the heats to secure a place in the top-24/semis. It will be a big step forward to earn a place in the world top-8.
In the metric mile, Jenny Blundell, Linden Hall and Zoe Buckman have also made the semi-finals, the first occasion three Aussies have made it this far in Olympic middle-distance events.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL – Women’s Quarter-Finals
Rio time: 23:59, AEST: Monday 12:59
Australian pair Taliqua Clancy and Louise Bawden won their round of 16 match against Poland in three sets yesterday (Saturday). Now they will line up for a late match in the quarter-finals, playing off against US duo Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross at 11:59pm Sunday (AEST 12:59pm Monday).

Other sports in action on day six are: Shooting (men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions Qualification) and Synchronised Swimming (Duets Free Routine – Preliminary)
