Diamond roars back into World Cup contention

Dual Olympic gold medallist Michael Diamond (NSW) has shot a perfect 25 in the third round of the men’s trap at the 2011 ISSF World Cup at the Sydney International Shooting Centre as he chases an Olympic quota for Australia.

Dual Olympic gold medallist Michael Diamond (NSW) has shot a perfect 25 in the third round of the men’s trap at the 2011 ISSF World Cup at the Sydney International Shooting Centre as he chases an Olympic quota for Australia.

Following scores of 24 and 22 on the opening day, Diamond showed his class in the third round to score a perfect 25 in tricky conditions on the range he won his second Olympic gold medal on in 2000.

After three rounds Diamond has raced up the leader board to sit in a tie for 5th position, just three targets behind Russian Alexey Alipov.

Diamond is tied with fellow Australian and 2004 Olympic bronze medallist Adam Vella (VIC) who shot 22 in his third round after rounds of 24 and 25 on the opening day.

The final two rounds will be held tomorrow ahead of the six person final on Friday afternoon (5.15pm), with the top two shooters (who have previously not won a quota in this Olympic cycle) to win quota places for their country for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Diamond said it was important to put together a clean round on Thursday.

“Conditions are pretty extraordinary out there and it’s always been the case,” Diamond said. “Light plays a big part so for me to have shot a 25 today keeps me in the ball game which is highly important at this stage of the event.

“Yesterday I was a little bit impatient and my game plan wasn’t 100 per cent. Today was much better and I’m looking forward to the final two rounds tomorrow.”

The final round of the women’s trap will be held shortly, with Laetisha Scanlan (VIC) and Suzy Balogh (NSW) both still in contention for a place in the final later this afternoon.
