Diamond wins World Cup Final

Australia’s most decorated shooter Michael Diamond (Gold Coast, QLD) has added another title to his list after winning the gold medal in the men’s trap at the World Cup Final in Al Ain, UAE.

Australia’s most decorated shooter Michael Diamond (Gold Coast, QLD) has added another title to his list after winning the gold medal in the men’s trap at the World Cup Final in Al Ain, UAE.

Diamond, who is on track to compete at his sixth Olympic Games in London next year, won a shoot-off against Italian Rodolfo Vigano after the pair was locked on 142 targets from a possible 150 after the final.

The two time Olympic gold medallist held his nerve to hit all four targets in the shoot-off for gold, while the Italian missed his fourth shot to hand the victory to Diamond.

Earlier in the day the 39-year-old had qualified for the final in equal first after finishing his five qualifying rounds on a total of 119 out of 125.

Diamond was level with Vigano and fellow Italian Massimo Fabbrizi moving into the single barrel final and with one shot remaining in the final had the chance to take the title, but narrowly missed a high right hander.

Diamond composed himself in the shoot-off to win his fourth World Cup Final title and said he was happy with his performance.

“I’m always nervous going into single barrel finals because it can be anyone’s game and that’s the idea of these finals now,” Diamond said.

“To have shot a 23 in the final and miss my last target to do that is still pretty good and I’m lucky the final went my way in the end.”

The World Cup Final is only open to a select few qualifiers in each of the five shotgun disciplines, with twelve shooters contesting the men’s trap event.

Diamond has already secured a quota place for Australia at the 2012 London Olympic Games, and provided he continues on his current form is a strong chance to be nominated to the Australian Olympic Committee at the end of April next year.
