The Hockeyroos are through to their third World Cup final from the last four World Cups after defeating home team Spain in a bizarre semi-final.

In the last minute of the match Spain earnt a penalty corner for a chance to break the deadlock and go into their first ever final, however, the ground was plunged into darkness as someone apparently deliberately turned out the lights.

Play was stopped for fifteen minutes while the lights returned, when it did resume Spain couldn't convert from two attempts and the game went into extra-time.

Needing composure the Hockeyroos remained calm under pressure and in the second minute of extra-time Suzie Faulkner deflected a goal past the Spanish keeper from a penalty corner play.

The win has set up a dream final with their fierce rival, the Netherlands, on Sunday (Monday AEST). While Spain will play Argentina for third.

As was expected, the Hockeyroos had to battle hard for the win, fighting a stacked Spanish defence, both sides having some good opportunities on goal during regulation time.

Most opportunities came from penalty corners with the Hockeyroos unable to convert from four attempts in a row, in the second half.

As has been the case all tournament the Hockeyroos win was set-up from defence, Rachel Imison keeping another clean sheet for the match. Spain's defence was also tough to counter, with the Australian forwards having no room to move in the crowded circle.

After playing Japan - who play a similarly defensive style - in an earlier pool game though, the Hockeyroos remained patient and kept creating opportunities with their attacking style. A number of those opportunities came close but they couldn't manage to find the back of the net till, in Golden Goal Extra Time, Suzie Faulkner hit the shot that sent the Australia into another World Cup final.

The Hockeyroos will be looking to go one step further than the Kookaburras in Sunday's final but the Dutch will be hard to beat and have looked strong all tournament.

It will be a great game with the World Cup final count standing at 1-1 between the two sides after the Netherlands beat Australia, in Sydney, in 1990 but then the Hockeyroos turning the tables in Utrecht, in 1998.

The final will be played at 5pm in Madrid (1am AEST) and can be seen LIVE in Australia on FoxSports 2.
