Dwyer scores hat-trick

Jamie Dwyer has reconfirmed his status as one of the world's best players by scoring a hat-trick of goals in Australia's 8-2 win over Spain in the first Test in Perth.

In what was Australia's first match against Spain since they were knocked out of the gold medal race at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the Kookaburras were determined to come out on top in the opening game of the two-Test series.

Although the Kookaburras team featured several newcomers such as Matthew Swann, Brent Dancer and Glenn Turner, it was veteran Dwyer who led the way early.

Demonstrating why he has twice been voted as the world player of the year, Dwyer made the most of his opportunity at the seven-minute mark when a tackle outside the circle led to a turn over, giving Dwyer and opportunity which he converted with a reverse stick shot from an extremely tight angle.

Spain converted a penalty corner at the 18-minute mark. Des Abbott and Rob Hammond scored to give Australia a 3-1 lead at halftime.

Dwyer scored his second goal at the 43-minute mark to shut Spain out of the match. Two minutes later the Olympic gold medallist Dwyer had a hat-trick as a failed Spanish attempt to clear the ball fell into his lap.

Luke Doerner, Grant Schubert and Matthew Butturini also scored in the second half for the Kookaburras, who will face Spain again in Perth on Sunday before heading to Melbourne to compete in the Champions Trophy from starting on November 28.

"Obviously you are never quite happy when you have two goals scored against you," Kookaburras assistant coach Graham Reid said.

"We have things to work on, but we were happy with the goals that we put into the back of the net.

"We will have another hard game tomorrow and Spain will obviously be hurt with today's game."
