En Route to Paris 2024: Rowing World Champs continue, Aussies take on the Brussels Diamond League and more

Rowing - World Championships

Aussie rowers continue their World Rowing Championships campaign in Belgrade, Serbia, with world titles and Paris 2024 Olympic quotas on the line.

The undefeated women’s pair, Jessica Morrison and Annabelle McIntyre have raced their way into Saturday’s medal race, after winning their semi-final against the Dutch crew by 0.87 seconds. Their win has secured Australia a boat at next year’s Olympic Games.

Three other crews qualified for the semi-finals - the women’s quad scull, women’s four and men’s four all placing third and earning a spot in the final and Paris 2024.

 

The men’s quad scull finished 6th in their semi-final, however their hopes of qualifying for Paris 2024 at this event are still alive granted they win Saturday’s B Final.

Weightlifting - World Championships

Aussie lifters continue their World Championship campaign with major world ranking points on offer, taking place between 4-17 September 2023 in Saudi Arabia.

It is a significant event for the lead up to the Paris 2024 Olympics as each athlete’s world ranking position in April next year, plus their attendance at a minimum of three milestone events, will contribute to determining an athlete’s eligibility for Paris 2024 under the International Weightlifting Federation’s qualification criteria.

A big group of Aussies are set to compete in the coming days. Darcy Kay takes on the women's 64kg C competition on Saturday at 9pm AEST. Tokyo 2020 Olympian Kiana Elliott (women's 64kg B), Kyle Bruce and Oliver Saxton (men's 89kg E) will compete on Sunday from 4pm AEST.

Artistic Gymnastics - FIG World Challenge Cup

After competing in Mersin, Turkey last week, Aussie male gymnasts Heath Thorpe, Jesse Moore, Blair Stewart and Logan Owen are flying over to Szombathely, Hungary to compete in the next phase of the World Challenge Cup.

Athletics - Brussels Diamond League

A five-strong Australian team will compete at the Athletics Diamond League in Brussels from 8 September, with World Championships medallists Eleanor Patterson and Kurtis Marschall headlining the team.

The Australian contingent will look to secure vital qualifying points at this event to book their spot in the Eugene Diamond League final, taking place later this month.

World Championship bronze medallist Kurtis Marschall looks to improve his current PB of 5.95m in the men’s Pole Vault on Saturday, a height he has achieved twice already in 2023. 

That same day, World Championship silver medallist Eleanor Patterson will take on the women’s High Jump, Linden Hall and Jessica Hull will contest the 1500m, and Tasmania’s Stewart McSewyn will take on the men’s 2000m.

Sport Climbing - IFSC Lead World Cup

The IFSC Climbing World Cup, held in Koper, Slovenia starts today with lead qualification rounds and semi-finals, then heading into finals tomorrow.

Flying solo in the competition is Aussie climber, Campbell Harrison who is starting the qualification round 10th on the start-list, his 'favourite starting position.'

Football - Olympic qualifying at U23 Asian Cup

The Olyroos are in Tajikistan aiming to qualify for the U23 Asian Cup in Qatar 2024. They’ve started strong after defeating Laos 7-1. They will face the home team of Tajikistan on Wednesday 13 September (1:30am AEST) as they aim to top their group.

With the U23 Asian Cup the primary qualification event for Paris 2024, performing well in Tajikistan to make the Asian Cup is essential to keeping their Paris Olympic aspirations alive.

Mountain Bike - World Cup

Triple Olympian Bec Henderson will compete at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Haute-Savoie on Sunday 10 September.

Haute-Savoie is the final European World Cup of the 2023 season. The next World Cup will be in West Virginia, USA before wrapping up in Mont-Sainte-Anne, Canada in October.

Surfing - World Surf League Finals

The World Surf League finals kick off today in Lower Trestles, California with four Australians set to compete for the coveted title of world champion. The top the five men and women from the WSL Championship Tour will go head-to-head in a one-day, winner-takes-all event. 

 

After finishing fourth on the tour, 20-year-old Molly Picklum will take on USA’s Caitlin Simmers in the opening heat, while men’s world number five Jack Robinson will go head-to-head with Brazil’s Joao Chianca.

Ethan Ewing and Tyler Wright will feature later in the heats, with the last person left standing taking home the World Championship.

Cycling - Road - La Vuelta a Espana

Stage 13 of La Vuelta a Espana kicks off over the weekend, with Australian Kaden Groves continuing to hold onto the green jersey after finishing the 12th stage in second place.

 

Fellow Aussie Christopher Hamilton is the overall top ranked Australian so far in the tour in 69th position, with Michael Storer following closely behind in 71st.

After 21 stages, the Spanish road race will come to an end on Sunday 17 September in Madrid.
